A Doctor Honoris Causa of MU – Plovdiv has been awarded a distinguished prize – Prof. Slavik Tabakov awarded the EFOMP Honorary Medal

Prof. Slavik Tabakov One of MU – Plovdiv’s honorary doctorate recipients has been honored with the prestigious Honorary medal of the European Federation of Medical Physics. Since the founding of the European Federation of Medical Physics in 1980, this medal has been awarded only 8 times.

On 23 May 2025 the EFOMP President Dr Efi Koutsouveli presented the EFOMP Medal to Dr Slavik Tabakov, FIPEM, FIOMP, FIUPESM.
The EFOMP Medal honours an individual who has pursued an outstanding and internationally acknowledged contribution to the advancement of medical physics. During the ceremony at the Alpe-Adria European Conference at ICTP, Trieste, Italy, Dr Tabakov made a brief presentation related to the second update of the Encyclopaedia of Medical Physics with Scientific Dictionary of terms in 31 languages. This huge project, which he has developed in 2005 and continues to lead, includes now over 400 specialists from 36 countries. Its website www.emitel2.eu is used globally in support of medical physics education.

Dr Tabakov expressed his gratitude to all colleagues, who took part in the project. He underlined the need of more textbooks and teaching materials for the profession. As Director of the MSc in Clinical Sciences (Medical Physics) and MSc Clinical Sciences (Clinical Engineering) at King’s College London (2000-2018), Dr Tabakov expanded the courses to become some of the largest in the world. As President of the International Organisation for Medical Physics, IOMP (2015-2018) he established the Journal Medical Physics International and supported the incorporation of both IOMP and IUPESM as British companies with headquarters at IPEM, York. Over his long career he helped the establishment of 18 MSc programmes in medical physics in various countries (the first one being in the Medical University Plovdiv in his native country – Bulgaria) and strongly supported the professional development in the Low and Middle Income countries. Dr Tabakov is Coordinating Director of the ICTP College on Medical Physics since 2002. Over 1500 students from 82 developing countries have graduated this unique College so far.
