Education

The Department of „Health Care Management”, originally entitled „Health Care”, was established by decision of the Academic council on 18.02.2003. There are three sections in the department:

  • Health Care Management
  • Medical Ethics and Law
  • Pedagogy and Psychology

The following can apply for a master’s degree in USG: graduates with a bachelor’s degree in health care; the professional bachelors who, after graduating from medical colleges, acquired one of the specialties “Social Activities”, “Social Pedagogy”, “Social Management” or “Health Management” /with a duration of study of three semesters and an internship/; bachelor’s degree in health care management /with a duration of study of two semesters and an internship/.
The habilitated teachers and assistants from the department take an active part in the educational process of the “Health Management” specialty. The educational capacity exceeds 600 students per academic year, with the number of hours several times exceeding that required for theoretical departments. The new generation of healthcare managers and healthcare executives are emerging as effective modern-day leaders for the various, incl. highest levels of management of health activities. The department is also active in international exchange. In 2007, public health students from higher medical schools of central Europe were enrolled in individual English-language training as part of a pre-graduate internship.
In 2009, members of the academic staff, in the person of the main assistants Marieta Todorova and Vanina Mihailova, participated in a teaching exchange under the Lifelong learning Program Higher Education Erasmus in Poland, humanitarian college, city of Wroclaw, with a lecture course in the field of professional distress, rehabilitation management and methodology of organizing and conducting practical classes. In 2018, members of the academic staff of the department participated in exchanges under the Erasmus+ program and in other teaching exchange programs for both teaching and learning purposes. A teaching exchange was held at Miguel Hernández University in the city of Elche, Alicante, Spain with a lecture course on psychological constraints in decision-making and intergenerational differences in an organizational context. Exchange for the purpose of teaching was also carried out in universities in Turkey and Poland, and exchange for the purpose of training – in Greece.”

The main scientific directions are:

  • Current public health issues (with an emphasis on managerial, bioethical and business ethical, psychosocial, rehabilitation, legal and other dimensions);

  • Epidemiological study of eating disorders; Screening for early diagnosis of asymptomatic cerebrovascular disease in clinically healthy adults; Research on conflicts in a healthcare organization;

  • Food Chain Ethics; Organization of continuing education of students; Right to information and legal regulation in healthcare;
  • Bioprinting;
  • Impact of digitization in healthcare;

Lecturers in the department are authors and co-authors of a number of monographs published in Bulgaria, Poland, Greece and Great Britain.

The scientific production of the academic staff of the department during the period 2015-2020. includes 187 scientific publications, of which 79 in Bulgarian and 108 in foreign publications. The lecturers of the department have prepared 143 scientific reports, of which 78 have been presented at foreign scientific forums. During the mentioned period, they have published as authors or co-authors 10 textbooks and study aids. Representatives of the department were leaders or participants in the following projects: Influence of serotonin and kynurenine on postoperative pain, neuroinflammation and anxiety (Project manager: Assoc. D. Neychev, PhD); Development and evaluation of the effectiveness of a method based on serious games for early diagnosis and therapy in adult patients with cognitive disorders (supervisors Prof. N. Mateva and Prof. R. Masaldzhieva); Objectification of postoperative pain control during extraction of impacted mandibular third molars (leader Prof. Dimitar Atanasov), KOPO – How oncogenetics predicts and educates (Coordinator: Prof. Nonka Mateva, PhD), National Scientific Program of the MES “Young Scientists and Postdoctoral Students” , Application of immunostimulating methods to increase the quality of life in children from 4 to 7 years of age (Supervisor: Assoc. Desislava Bakova, PhD).”

The scientific activity of the department staff for the period 2021. – 2022 includes 86 publications, of which: 41 publications in journals that are referenced in Scopus (with impact rank, SJR)/Web of Science, of which 7 are publications with an impact factor (only according to Thomson Reuters); 17 publications in foreign journals without impact factor/impact rank; 12 publications in national journals; 16 publications in scientific collections published in Bulgaria and abroad, of which 4 publications were prepared together with students.

The total impact factor of the scientific production of the members of the department is 5.708 for 2021. and 16,862 for 2022. In the period of 2021 – 2022 the team of the “Health Care Management” department has published 9 monographs and/or chapters in monographs, of which 3 were published in Bulgaria and 6 were published abroad. The teachers participated in the preparation of 2 teaching aids as a team and 1 textbook. The author’s publications of the professors of the department have been cited a total of 142 times, including 82 citations from foreign authors and 60 citations from Bulgarian authors.

In the period 2021-2022 the academic staff of the department participated in a total of 63 conferences, congresses, seminars and other scientific forums, of which 46 participations in international forums and 17 participations in national scientific forums, including 6 participations with students. In the same period, the members of the department participated in 20 international, national and intra-university scientific, educational or other projects. 4 young scientists and doctoral students, as well as 1 student, are involved in the implementation of the scientific projects. In connection with research on scientific projects, 11 publications and 18 scientific announcements were made. Qualified teachers from the department were reviewers of 7 scientific articles in foreign scientific journals and 4 scientific projects. They have produced 24 dissertation reviews and 11 academic tenure reviews. In 2022, professors from the department participated in 4 national and 5 international trainings. 7 participations under the Erasmus program have been implemented in universities in North Macedonia, Greece and Turkey.

The faculty of the department is a member of 8 foreign and 8 Bulgarian scientific organizations/scientific societies. Four professors from the department participate in the editorial boards of 2 foreign and 4 Bulgarian scientific journals.
