Research activity of the department of Hygiene

SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF HYGIENE

The research activities of the Department are diverse in nature and include studies in the field of primary prevention. Most of the research has been carried out in cooperation with other departments and institutes. For the period 2010-2018, 5 independent monographs have been published and more than 10 participations in monographs with separate chapters have been registered; more than 90 publications have been published in authoritative Bulgarian and foreign journals. including 18 in journals with IF, more than 60 scientific reports have been made at prestigious scientific forums in Bulgaria and abroad, more than 250 citations have been established in Bulgarian and foreign journals. For the period 2020-2026, 2 independent monographs have been published, participation in collective scientific and educational publications has been registered, as well as a number of publications in domestic and foreign journals with IF, including publications in journals with JIF/JCI and quartile Q1/Q2.

THE MAIN DIRECTIONS IN THE SCIENTIFIC TOPICS ARE:
1. Studies in the field of the relationship between environmental factors and health:

Influence of atmospheric pollution on health in various aspects – morbidity of the population, analysis of respiratory functions, physical capacity, clinical and biochemical changes in children and adolescents, etc.; Importance of the qualities of drinking water for health; Influence of certain environmental pollutants (nitrates, thiocyanates, perchlorates, etc.) on the iodine status of children, adolescents and pregnant women; Influence of noise pollution in the urban environment on the health of different contingents of the population.

2. Hygienic problems in the professional environment:
Assessment and health importance of the physical (microclimate, noise, vibration, lighting) and chemical factors in workers in the drinking water extraction and wastewater treatment system; analysis of occupational risk when working with biological agents in the same field; Psychology of work, assessment of fatigue and stress, incl. Burnout syndrome in some groups of workers, etc.

3. Hygienic problems of nutrition and dietetics – nutritional epidemiology:
Nutrition in different population groups – students, pregnant and lactating women, children and adults, working in various industries and in contact with harmful substances; nutritional prophylaxis of some socially significant diseases; functional foods, health assessment of microbiological and chemical contamination of food, etc.

4. Hygiene problems of childhood and adolescence: Assessment of the physical development of children and adolescents; analysis of morbidity and hospitalization in children from ecologically risky regions in the country; studies on the incidence of some socially significant diseases in children and adolescents (overweight and obesity, micronutrient deficiencies), etc.
