Students in the following fields are trained at the department: Medicine, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy, Healthcare management, Management of Medical and Social Activities and Public Health, Nursing and Midwifery, as well as students from the Medical College (Public Health Inspector, Assistant Pharmacist, Dental Laboratory Technician, Physical Therapist Assistant, Radiographer, Clinical Laboratory Technician).
English courses are offered to students in Medicine and Dentistry. The course provides an introduction to the subject of Hygiene. Specific subjects taught at the Department include: Hygiene and Ecomedicine; Hygiene and Ecology; Hygiene and Ecology of Healthcare Facilities; Hygiene of Facilities for Medicosocial Care; Hygiene of Facilities for Continued Treatment, Rehabilitation, and Prophylaxis; Clinical Nutrition; Hygiene and Safety of Labor in Laboratories; Occupational Hygiene; Environmental Hygiene; Hygiene of Nutrition; Childhood and Adolescent Hygiene; Radiation Hygiene.
Training consists in lectures and seminars (practical classes). The focus is on practical training – around 25% of the practicals involve field work – investigation of healthy and hygienic requirements in various community, industrial, food service, educational, and childcare facilities. Case studies have been introduced in the practical seminars and modern audiovisual equipment is used.
The Department also offers medical internship and postgraduate training of specializing physicians. Lecturers from the Department are involved in the training of physicians specializing in general hygiene and occupational medicine. The academic staff is regularly updating the lecture course and practical seminars by introducing new multimedia presentations and interactive forms of teaching.
The Department has been accredited and offers a doctoral degree in Hygiene (Including Environmental and Occupational Medicine, Nutrition, etc.).

Research activity of the department of Hygiene
The research activity of the department is diverse and involves studies in the basic areas of prevention. A major part of the research has been done in collaboration with other departments and institutions. In the period of 2010-2017, 5 monographs and 10 chapters of books were published; more than 90 scientific papers in Bulgarian and foreign journals, including 18 papers with IF were published; more than 60 scientific reports were made in prestigious scientific forums in Bulgaria and abroad, more than 250 citations in Bulgarian and foreign journals are registered.
Basic areas of research:
1. Studies of the relationship between Environment and Health:
The influence of air pollution on various aspects of health – population morbidity, analysis of the respiratory functions, physical capacity, clinical and biochemical changes in children and adolescents, etc.;
The health benefits of the drinking water quality;
The influence of some environmental pollutants (nitrates, thiocyanates, perchlorates, etc.) on the iodine status of children, adolescents and pregnant women]
The influence of noise pollution in the settlements over the health of different population groups.
2. Hygiene problems of occupational medicine:
Assessment and health significance of physical (microclimate, noise, vibrations and light) and chemical factors among people working in the system for obtaining drinking water and wastewater purification; analysis of the professional risk of working with biological agents in the same field.;
Psychology of labour, assessment of fatigue and stress, including the burnout syndrome in some groups of employees, etc.
3. Hygiene issues in nutrition and dietetics – nutritional epidemiology: nutrition in various population groups – students, pregnant women, breastfeeding women, children and adults, people working in different fields and exposed to hazards; nutritional prevention of some socially significant diseases; functional foods, health assessment of microbiological and chemical contamination of foods, etc.
4. Hygiene issues in childhood and adolescence – assessment of the physical development of children and adolescents; analysis of the morbidity and hospitalization of children from ecological risk regions in the country; studies on the incidence of some socially significant diseases in children and adolescents (overweight and obesity, micronutrient deficiency), etc.
