EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY:
In the department of “Oral surgery” the following two disciplines are taught:
The curriculum “Special surgery, including local anaesthesia and analgesic medications in dental medicine” provides an opportunity for the students to develop profound understanding and adequate technique in the basic surgical manipulations, means and methods of analgesia. The education in the field of this discipline aims to provide thorough knowledge and practical competence to the dental medicine undergraduates.
During the V and VI semesters, the students are taught the discipline “Special surgery, including local anaesthesia and analgesic medications in dental medicine” with a total of 60 hours of lectures and 120 hours of practical lessons. The lecture course is carried out by associate professor d-r Deyan Neitchev, PhD, professor d-r Petya Pechalova, PhD, associate professor d-r Ivan Chenchev, PhD, associate professor d-r Hristo Daskalov, PhD and professor d-r Dimitar Atanasov, PhD. The theoretical and practical training in this curriculum ends with the conduction of a semestral exam.
During the VII, VIII, IX, and X semesters, the students are taught the discipline “Oral and maxillofacial surgery” with a total of 60 hours of lectures and 270 hours of practical lessons. Part of the practical course is conducted in the department of “Maxillofacial surgery”. The lecture course is carried out by the already mentioned professors and associate professors. The theoretical and practical training in this curriculum ends with the conduction of a semestral exam.

The scientific activity of the Department of Oral surgery is focused on the following directions:
- Preprosthetic surgery;
- Surgical treatment of the periodontal diseases;
- Jaw cysts;
- Inflammatory processes in the maxillofacial region;
- Physiology of bone structures;
- Dental implantology;
- Supernumerary teeth;
- Preemptive analgesia in oral surgery.
